Always drawn to the atmosphere of circadian transitions, I composed ‘Nightwatch’ from imagined forms of life emerging when dusk turns into darkness. This work continues a recent investigation of neckpieces referencing ancient Finnish nature symbolism and mythology.The collar is bound from 80 small sculptures, each a hybrid of a strange bloom and a mischievous spirit, sensitively responding to the movement of the wearer. The piece can be worn as a talisman and a courage-giver; as an invisibility cloak on a secret outing, as a celebration of the bluest night … or, just held as a special object which subtly changes along the changing light.In 2023, Nightwatch (The Rites of summer) was shown in 'Third Story' marking the new location and format of Funaki gallery, and in the landmark ten-year survey exhibition 'Melbourne Now' at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).
