A forest spirit visits the city alone
Brooches, 2017-2018
Dedicated to singer-songwriter John Prine.
A forest spirit visits the city alone series imagines a meeting between nature and the urban environment. The materiality and form of the pieces echo inner city structures and surfaces (a forest of a different kind), while their tonality and quiet sparkle are reminiscent of the subtlety and fragility of the natural world around us – and within us.
Wherever we are, we’re always connected to the wider universe: walking among buildings of concrete and steel, we still see the clouds above, the shadows created bychanging light, and the reflections on the ground after rain. And even among the thousands of others close to us in a city, we can’t always escape the strange loneliness that sometimes catches us during the moments between late afternoon and the first evening stars. A certain kind of melancholy, a thought about the passing of time.
