‘Koivu (Birch)’

Koivu (Birch)
2025
Wall work
Locally gathered discarded paper and cardboard: cigarette packs, takeaway cups, beer packaging, receipts, notes; balsa wood, cotton.
The materials have been gently brushed or soaked where necessary, but no other alternations have been made. The work is entirely composed of paper waste.

Midsummer, Midwinter stems from Kiuru’s childhood memories and Finnish craft traditions. Koivu / Birch highlights the surprising similarities between paper debris and birch bark, paying homage to the national tree of Finland and the symbol of Midsummer celebrations. A joyful development for the artist, the collecting and processing of discarded matter to fabricate a larger work felt akin to sourcing and conditioning art materials from nature: each fragment collected from local streets was washed, dried and inspected for its tonal qualities, and cut to create a pattern resembling traditional Finnish bark crafts.
