Long ago, the artist’s mum taught her how to make a traditional ‘himmeli’, a Finnish winter ornament dating back hundreds of years, from carefully selected and prepared rye straw. Jäähimmeli (Ice himmeli / Bloodlines) is the artist’s personal, contemporary take on this tradition, using 4000 glass capillary tubes to reflect light like frozen water, and as a reference to personal heritage: to blood. Childhood lake and sky pendants echo the artist’s oldest childhood memories in Lappeenranta, Southern Karelia, with two of the pieces incorporating sand from the lake beach embedded in their surface.
